Tom Hamburger of the Washington Post has some political inside baseball on Ted Cruz’s successful effort to woo important religious conservatives who can in turn mobilize big congregations likely to vote in the Republican primary, particularly in Iowa and the Southern March 1 primary states such as Arkansas.
Marco Rubio is trying to catch up, but …. The supporters of Cruz include many former admirers and supporters of Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, who, the article said, “remain beloved but are considered unable to defeat Trump.”
A major Cruz gathering of money people and the preachers is set in Texas after Christmas, Hamburger reports.
Cruz has been scoring well in a variety of straw polls in Arkansas, but a number of elected Republicans are strong Rubio backers, too. Strong Huckabee backers are not much in evidence in his former home state.
