Jim Gilmore, the former governor of Virginia, dropped out of the race for the GOP presidential nominee today. Gilmore was the only candidate who did not qualify for Saturday’s debate, leading to jokes that he might have to do the undercard debate by himself.
Gilmore was never able to reach a single digit in polling. He got a total of 133 votes in New Hampshire, less than several candidates who had already dropped out, and about half as many as a performance artist named Vermin Supreme who wears a boot on his head. Gilmore got a total of twelve votes in Iowa.
Gilmore has not clarified why he ran, although his qualifications weren’t so different from Jeb Bush.
The field is now down to six: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson and John Kasich.
