Friday’s dragging, so it’s important to appreciate the little things … like the fact that, on this lovely April morning, you’re not locked up for life inside the near-colorless concrete tomb that is the Arkansas Department of Correction’s Varner Supermax Prison near Grady in Lincoln County.
Seen below is a rather haunting video we ran across recently on the ADC’s YouTube page, featuring a series of views inside Varner. Prisons are, for all kind of reasons, one of those black boxes where society forgets its problems, with access by visitors and the press strictly regulated. That makes this four-minute glimpse at day-to-day life inside the walls, as stark as it is, a rarity.
Varner is, we should note, the prison from which a 41-year old lifer was trying to escape when he was shot and killed by guards yesterday. After watching this video, we kind of see his point, as well as that of Death Penalty opponents who say that life in a cage without the possibility of parole is a worse punishment than death.
