Some statistical reporting today from the New York Times says the rich live longer than the poor. And geography also can be destiny, with the poor doing better in some places than others.
The feature includes an interactive map. Arkansas is middling — some areas (Fayetteville, Harrison) a bit above average for life expectancy and some others (Fort Smith, Little Rock, El Dorado, Jonesboro) a little below average.
Sen. Bart Hester would just say poor people need to get off their lazy butts and make some more money so they can afford insurance and medical care. Or run for the legislature, where the income is well above the family median income in Arkansas and comprehensive health insurance is dirt cheap. Rep. Mary Bentley would say there are churches aplenty to take care of poor folks’ needs, though figures indicate some are falling through cracks.
