The Arkansas chapter of the Sierra Club’s  has objected to the state Department of Environmental Quality‘s plan to continue general permitting for hog feeding operations. Yesterday was the deadline to submit comments on the proposal to renew the process.

The Sierra Club said the “lamentable” approval of a hog farm in the Buffalo River watershed illustrates the inadequacy of general permitting. It wants feeding operations to be required to go through an individual permit process that takes into account special circumstances such as the porous limestone beneath the Buffalo-area hog farm that allows for pollution from hog waste to travel great distances and potentially reach water.

The Sierra Club also said the public hadn’t been made fully aware of yesterday’s deadline for comments on continuation of the loose rule-making procedure and the deadline for comments should be extended 30 days.
