Oklahoma legislators –– some of them anyway — apparently are flouting a ban on guns in the Oklahoma State Capitol and packing them into legislative chambers. They insist they have a legal right to sidestep metal detection screens, which an AP reporter has apparently detected.

Which brings us to Arkansas. Do the State Capitol Police ever allow anyone to sidestep screening for weapons? If a legislator demurred, how would they react? And what about the larger question: If guns make us safer, why NOT allow open carry by everyone in the state Capitol — lawmakers and the rest of the public?
