The State Police said Michael Graff, 29, a deputy in the Pulaski County jail, was taken into custody Monday night as a suspect in sexual assault of a female prisoner.

A news release said a 26-year-old inmate being taken alone to the state McPherson Unit prison in Newport was allegedly assaulted by Graff south of Searcy. He’s in custody in the White County Jail.

The State Police said the filing of formal charges will be up to the prosecutor. The inmate reported the incident to state officials after she arrived at the prison. That led to notification of the State Police.

No comment yet from the sheriff’s office.

UPDATE: Sheriff Doc Holladay has fired Graff for rules violations.

The sheriff’s office issued this statement:

Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility Deputy Michael Graff was arrested by the Arkansas State Police last night.  The initial allegation was made after the inmate arrived at the McPherson Unit. ADC notified PCSO of the incident and we in turn immediately notified the Arkansas State Police due to not knowing at the time where exactly the incident transpired. PCSO Investigators aided ASP Investigators with their investigation.

Allegations of this nature are taken very seriously and investigated expeditiously to insure the safety of the inmates. Based on the findings of the criminal investigation and Deputy Graff’s arrest, he has been terminated from the Detention Facility.
