The Little Rock City Board will consider Tuesday night an appeal of the Planning Commission’s denial of a request to allow a Jimmy John’s fast food sandwich shop at 4520 W. Markham, previously occupied by a branch bank.
The proposal, which needed approval for a drive-through lane, drew only one favorable vote on the Planning Commission and the city staff also recommended denial. Many in the neighborhood, which includes a number of single family homes also objected. The argument is in favor is that Markham has been strip zoned nearby for fast-food restaurants, why not another. Which is exactly the fear that residents raised when the very first fast food establishment, a KFC, was allowed onto the strip.
The City Board has been known to ignore the Planning Commission, as when it overrode a unanimous denial of a branch bank on North University Avenue at R Street.
