The Central Arkansas Library System has begun a new podcast series, Primary Sources, to feature interviews with “interesting members of the community.” First interview is with Baker Kurrus, the businessman ousted by state Education Commissioner Johnny Key after a promising year as superintendent of the state-controlled Little Rock School District. Key wasn’t happy with Kurrus’ opposition to continued charter school expansion in the city, to the detriment of the district.

In the interview, Dr. David Stricklin, head of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, talks with Kurrus about his upbringing, education, early experiences as a lawyer, working with Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller, and his service on the LRSD school board. They also talk about Kurrus’ appointment as superintendent of LRSD schools, the problems he tried to address, the politics surrounding the district, his removal as superintendent, and his views on public schools and challenges they face.
