There’s much to say on the appearance of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump before a military audience last night, particularly about the failure of moderator Matt Lauer to call Trump on dishonesty about his positions on Libya and Iraq and about the failure of many press accounts to include this salient point.
But let me focus on the calculated misogyny of the Republican campaign.
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus gave Hillary Clinton’s performance at Wednesday’s NBC town hall negative marks because, in part, he didn’t like her facial expression.
Priebus fired off a tweet calling the Democratic nominee “angry + defensive” during the national security-focused event. “No smile and uncomfortable,” he added.
This is part of the Trump messaging that Hillary Clinton doesn’t “look” presidential.
Hillary Clinton is a woman. Men should be president.
What’s more, she’s a humorless bitch.
Trump can get away with this with many voters, particularly the male ones. Can he also get away with praising Vladimir Putin?
Several commented, included Hillary Clinton’s own Twitter account, that war and veterans’ health were not laughing matters.
PS — Here’s fact-checking absent from the televised event.
