A mistrial was declared today in the trial of Michael Slager, the former police officer who in 2015 shot and killed a fleeing, unarmed African-American man, Walter Scott.
Video taken by a bystander shows Slager firing shots into Scott’s back from a short distance. Slager has insisted that Scott wrested the officer’s Taser away and threatened to use it on him; the ex-cop told the jury he was terrified during the confrontation. The bystander’s video also shows Slager dropping the Taser near Scott’s prostrate body.
The jury — composed of 11 white jurors and one African-American juror — appears to have had a single hold out who said he could not convict Slager.
Slager was charged with murder, though with a lesser included charge of manslaughter. He still faces federal chargess
