The University of Arkansas’s Traveler newspaper reports that a third player, sophomore guard Briunna Freeman, has left the women’s basketball team for undisclosed reasons.
It happens, the article notes, that all three were among the six players who knelt during the playing of the National Anthem before an exhibition game Nov. 3. The university has said the players were within their rights to make the expression in support of a national reaction to police treatment of black suspects, but it prompted a fierce public outcry and university officials have taken several steps to mitigate the damage.
The article does not say the departures were related to the episode. Jordan Danberry and Tatiyana Smith also have left the team. Coach Jimmy Dykes said Freeman was “a valuable member of our team, a tremendous student and person,” She’ll remain on scholarship through the end of this academic year.
