U.S. Rep. Steve King is a racist and hatefully loony in other ways. The New York Times replays his rich history in this article today.
The article follows his latest slam of immigrants, a comment for which he later refused to apologize.
“We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies”
The King tweet was cheered by David Duke and other racist white nationalists.
Here’s the thing. You can do something about this other than sputter. Support someone who’s willing to take an electoral fight to King. Send Kim Weaver some money. It might be a losing proposition. King’s views apparently resonate in his congressional district. Weaver, who is a long-term care ombudsman for the Iowa Department of Aging, got only 39 percent in 2016. But maybe some of the people in Ames, Sioux City and Fort Dodge might tire of representation by a hateful laughing stock. Maybe.
And while you’re at it, take a look at Swing Left, a website targeting districts where past margins have been close and Democrats might have a chance to retake a GOP seat, particularly with the hoped-for blowback against Trump in 2018. It’s not just about giving money in targeted districts, it’s about writing, calling and even visiting those districts to help good candidates. You can target the closest potential swing district for your focus by using a search tool on the website. For a Little Rock ZIP code, for example, it’s a district in Southern Illinois. You can sign up for alerts and suggestions on ways to help.
Sending a few Arkansas Republican congressmen home would help, too but the happy Trump majority in Arkansas is a bit daunting.
