The Downtown Little Rock Partnership proudly announces that a Little Rock landmark, the Cave’s clock at Capitol Avenue and Main Street, is ticking again.
The clock hasn’t worked for years, but has been refurbished, including new neon lighting. Said a release:
“We are very excited to be able to restore this piece of downtown Little Rock’s history to its former glory,” said Gabe Holmstrom, DLRP Executive Director. “Now people walking down Main Street will have another functional piece of history to enjoy and admire, AND they won’t have to look at their smart phone to get the time!”
The namesake for the clock is Thomas M. Cave, owner of Cave’s Jewelers, which opened on East Capitol Avenue in downtown Little Rock in the early 1930s.
I wish we could have Cave’s back, with its beautiful fitted wooden cabinetry. And Stifft’s, where I bought my wife’s engagement ring. And M.M. Cohn. And Moses Melody Shop. And Thalheimer’s Smoke and Novelty Shop. And Tom and Andrew’s. And Pfeifer’s. And Blass Co. And Kempner’s. And Sears. And Arkansas Furniture and Carpet (where a kind salesman gently informed me that you don’t pay list price on furniture, guidance I could have used at Stifft’s too). And Walgreen’s soda fountain with strawberry shakes. And Woolworth doughnuts. And the D&D chili spaghetti.
But, hey, things are happening.
