The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported this morning that a concessions operator had applied for state permits to sell alcoholic beverages at basketball games at the University of Arkansas’s Bud Walton Arena, baseball games at Baum Stadium and gymnastics and volleyball events at Barnhill Arena.
Athletic Director Jeff Long is quoted as saying there are no “current plans” (my emphasis) to sell drinks. Of course not. Why would a company shell out $7,500 for permits if it had any intention of selling beer in Razorback stadiums? Also, an SEC rule change will be required first. You get the idea it’s in the works.
The need for more revenue is ever present on college campuses, with unending facility expansion projects and lengthy rosters of coaches commanding huge salaries.
UA already has alcohol in premium seating areas at the football stadium. UALR sells beer at its basketball games.
