Greg Gianforte, the Montana congressman-elect, has apologized to Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs for an unprovoked assault on him the night before his election May 25.

The apology is explicit and unqualified and includes a pledge of $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

It references lies told by Gianforte’s campaign staff the night of the assault, but still no explicit apologies have come from them and their future status with Gianforte isn’t clear. The apology, the Guardian notes, comes as part of a settlement of a potential civil claim by Jacobs against Gianforte. Jacobs has accepted it. Gianforte still faces court on a misdemeanor assault charge.
