The application process is now open for the marijuana cultivation and dispensing facilities to be allowed under the new medical marijuana law and already unsurprising evidence of local tension is underway.

An editorial in the West Memphis newspaper — “Turrrell, Arkansas: Your one-stop pot shop” — quotes Dorothy Cooper, the mayor of the town of 600 as saying Sen. Linda Chesterfield of Little Rock had talked to her about obtaining an application to make Turrell a cultivation center, though the county judge professed no knowledge of the effort. The editorial commented:

Let’s be realistic and say, yes, there is a remote possibility some investor might just consider pouring millions of dollars into a Turrell cultivation facility but, it is highly doubtful for a number of reasons.

One main reason would be because Turrell is so remote, it lacks the necessary security environment as well as response time for law enforement from the Crittenden County sheriff’s department.

That’s what the regulatory process is for, of course. I’ve not gotten a response as yet from a note to Chesterfield about her role in the budding bud industry.

Applications are being taken until Sept. 18 for five cultivation centers and 32 dispensary licenses.
