SEATS WITH A VIEW: New amphitheater at Mount Magazine State Park. Arkansas Parks

The 300-seat Cameron Bluff Amphitheater, a new version of a WPA-amphitheater that once was part of Mount Magazine’s attraction, will open July 19, the state Department of Parks and Tourism has announced.

The Works Progress Administration and U.S. Forest Service built an amphitheater in 1939, but a 1971 fire destroyed the lodge and the amphitheater deteriorated.

In 1983, legislation established a state park at Mount Magazine, the state’s highest point at 2,753 feet. That eventually led to the building of the new amphitheater, which retains a few seating fragments and the supporting wall for the stage of the original.

The new design includes parking, a walkway and an observation area. It may be rented.
