DETAILS LACKING: Mitch McCoy with copy of petition for protection that was denied because of insufficient information. The woman who wrote it was later killed. Her husband, shown in photo, was charged with the crime.

Sad story from Mitch McCoy at KARK/Fox 16. Elke Thomas, who authorities believe was slain by her husband Sunday in Lonoke County, had sought a court protection order last month, but it was denied for the insufficiency of her petition.

Tony Thomas, 58, who’s charged with first-degree murder in the slaying, has a past record that includes a manslaughter charge in 1988.

Court protection orders are not, of course, foolproof protection against abusers.

An advocate for victims of domestic violence talked with McCoy about the need to make petitions for protection as detailed as possible.
