The Associated Press reports that Iowa has experienced a 50 percent drop in family planning program participation after excluding Planned Parenthood and others that also provide abortion from participating.
Family planning (contraception) prevents pregnancy. No pregnancy, no abortion.
The dirty secret is that the religionists behind the push to make abortion unavailable and eventually illegal is that they also oppose contraception, too. In time, somebody will find that employers that exercise a religious right not to provide contraceptive coverage will have encouraged a lack of participation in family planning and more pregnancies.
And those who fight for these policies, such as Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, claim they are looking at for women’s health.
Arkansas is doing all it can to put Planned Parenthood out of business, including in providing basic health services, including family planning, to poor women. A followup on the Iowa experience shouldn’t be long in coming.
Advocates of cutting off Planned Parenthood always assert abundant medical options exist. It’s not true. In Iowa or here.
