The U.S. Supreme Court today denied a request that it stay a Pennsylvania Supreme Court order that congressional districts in that state must be withdrawn because they were unconstitutionally gerrymandered to favor Republicans.

Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin was among several Republicans who’d asked the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay of the state court ruling. It was considered a loony idea, given the ruling came on a state court interpretation of state law. But given the Republican leanings of at least four members of the Supreme Court, there was some fear the U.S. Supreme Court would intervene and prevent redistricting before the 2018 election. It didn’t happen.
