A reader passes along a feature on past winners of the National Spelling Bee, in its third round today. It began this year with three spellers from Arkansas., but none reached the finals.
Sarah Kliff wrote for Vox about the experiences of five past winners, including 1999 champion Nupur Lala of Tampa, who was a star of the 2002 documentary on the contest, “Spellbound.” Turns out she’s had a recent achievement in Arkansas. Kliff mentioned that Lala went to medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences after working in a cognitive neuroscience lab at MIT.
