John Troutt, the long-time editor and publisher of the Jonesboro Sun, died Thursday night at 88, his family tells me.
Troutt took the helm of the family newspaper after his father’s death and led it for decades before the newspaper was sold in 2000 to the Paxton group. It had grown to be the most important newspaper in that part of the state from the weekly it had been when purchased by his grandfather in 1901 A former employer of his remarks: “They followed the Freedom of Information Act at Jonesboro City Hall when John was around.”
A memorial service is set at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Jonesboro. Emerson Funeral Home will be handling arrangements.
Roy Ockert, a former Sun editor, wrote a tribute to Troutt that details a rich life in newspapering and his community.
