Rachel Maddow reported on MSNBC last night that the Justice Department had requested — and the Defense Department agreed — military lawyers to handle the crush of immigration work on the border. Which gives us an idea.

Jeff Sessions co-opting the military is a scary thought, apart from the more basic issue of sending lawyers with no background in immigration work to the border.

But here’s an idea: Could Arkansas volunteer Army-vet lawyers Tim Griffin, Trent Garner and Tom Cotton for this duty? But no. That would be unconstitutionally cruel to asylum seekers.

More seriously, U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu, a vet, said this about the assignment:

-JAGs are not trained in immigration law
-JAG Corps is always stretched thin
-JAGs main mission is to help commanders fight our wars, not prosecute misdemeanors.
