The Arkansas State Police say that a man who had fled from state troopers during a Lonoke County traffic stop this morning later died in a head-on crash on Interstate 40 west of Forrest City.

Police did not identify the man except to say he was 44 years old and driving a late model Chrysler sedan. He fled eastbound on I-40 after he was stopped by troopers at 10:37 a.m. at the 183 mile marker. Troopers pursued, but lost him.

At 11:31 a.m., moments after the suspect was observed on I-40 about 16 miles west of Forrest City, troopers were called to a head-on collision that involved four cars at the 275 mile marker. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene; four people in other cars were injured and one is believed to be in serious condition, the State Police said. That person was airlifted from the scene.

The police will release more details after the next of kin have been notified.
