As predicted last Friday in an account of a draft report, the Hutchinson-appointed School Safety Commission put an armed person at every school at the top of its recommendations.
The governor had a press event today to praise the fine work of his appointees. He insisted there’d be no unfunded mandates on school districts. though he acknowledged they’d have to cover the costs of the “recommendations.”(I wondered if that included his promise to raise beginning teacher pay? Will the state finance that, too?)
Here’s the full list of recommendations. (Hint to preparers: It’s oversight, not oversite.)
Most of the recommendations are about guns and security officers and law enforcement communication and emergency plans. The list does include recommendations for anti-bullying programs and enhanced mental health services. The 2019 legislature will take up some of the ideas, but districts will retain autonomy for their operations
