The State Police said a suspect shot by officers during a chase Monday night in which the man killed a police dog died in a hospital today.

Events began shortly before 7 p.m. Monday on Interstate 55 when a state trooper saw a vehicle in Mississippi County that matched the description of one that had been pursued earlier in Missouri.

After the trooper stopped the car, the driver got out and ran toward farm property. Two troopers and a deputy sheriff gave chase. A trooper also sent a K-9 after the suspect. The dog caught up and “made contact.” A State Police release said the suspect fired a gun and killed the dog. Then, according to police, he turned toward officers and engaged in a gunfight.

The suspect  was wounded and taken into custody at 7:11 p.m. He died this morning at a hospital. One trooper sustained minor injuries in the chase, but not a gunshot wound. Tuesday afternoon, the dead man was identified as James Edward Blackmon, 35, of Missouri.

The two troopers were placed on paid administrative leave while the use of deadly force is reviewed.
