A friend reviewing the precinct results of Democrat Clarke Tucker’s unsuccessful race for Congress against Republican Rep. French Hill passed along those figures and I think they are worth a look
You’ll see marked differences in neighborhood voting patterns. Tucker carried traditionally liberal precincts (including a 58 percent victory margin in Hill’s home voting precinct at the Heights Fire Station) and also smashed Hill in black voting precincts (despite pre-election polling that questioned Tucker’s voting strength both in Pulaski County generally and in black neighborhoods.)
In the first election for mayor, state Rep. Warwick Sabin carried traditionally liberal precincts; Kurrus ran strong in the western precincts where French Hill enjoyed
In short, it seems: Winning minority neighborhoods alone isn’t enough. Winning the west alone is certainly not enough. A coalition will be necessary and Sabin votes will be critical.
The race is nonpartisan, but some Republican associations clearly have attached to Kurrus. Scott, on the other hand, is having yet another fund-raiser this week hosted by Lisenne Rockefeller, widow of the Republican lieutenant governor (who once employed Kurrus). Kurrus had noticeable support, too, from some liberal areas where voters remembered his duty as Little Rock school superintendent.
Regardless, just for fun, the Tucker rundown in Pulaski County: He won Little Rock precincts against Hill by 25,184 votes, 67.6 percent to 32.4 percent of the two candidates’ combined vote (omitting the small vote for a Libertarian candidate). He carried the precincts outside Little Rock in Pulaski County by 2,260 votes, 51.9 percent to 48.1 cent. He lost the six counties outside Pulaski County by a big enough margin, more than 43,00 votes, to lose the election by more than 16,000 votes.
He should have run for mayor.
For some fodder to consider on Little Rock vote splits in the mayor’s race, here’s how the Little Rock precincts voted for 2nd District Congress (I’m not sure if some precincts might not include some voters outside the city limits):
