The Pine Bluff Commercial will end a Sunday print edition beginning Jan. 8, but resume a Saturday edition that would carry sports results. It also will switch to Postal Service delivery of all papers.

The paper currently publishes a print edition five days a week, omitting Saturday and Monday. Next year, the Sunday edition will be dropped, with Sunday features combined in the edition distributed Saturday.

I haven’t been able to reach newspaper executives, but the newspaper sent this letter to subscribers:

Dear Subscriber,

We trust you all have had a great holiday season thus far. We trust your Christmas was delightful like none other and we hope you were surrounded by good food, family, friends, and lots of excitement and holiday cheer.

As we wish you the very best in the year to come, we have some exciting news to share as we come upon the next year. We’re making some changes at the beginning of next year that will affect your newspaper delivery, so we wanted to tell you about those changes and why we are making them.

Beginning January 8, 2019, we will no longer print a separate Sunday edition of The Pine Bluff Commercial. Many of you indicated you miss your Saturday Sports updates, so with the change, we will have a combined Saturday and Sunday edition, making one bigger and better weekend edition. Our new printing schedule will be Tuesday-Friday and the weekend edition. The new weekend edition will be delivered on Saturday and will include your Sunday news. The sections will be clearly marked for you to identify the separate days.

This change will affect all subscribers, but especially subscribers on your route. Due to having all editions fall on postal days, we can now use the United States Postal Service to deliver on these routes.

Currently we deliver the newspaper to your driveways and doorsteps, however, large rural routes are becoming unprofitable for carriers who drive for hours a night to make these deliveries. Thus, beginning in January 2019, we will deliver to the post offices in towns across our coverage area for an exceptional dispatch each day we publish. That will allow you to receive your newspaper along with your daily mail.

To recap, there are many benefits these changes provide for our subscribers:

Headline Saturday Sports results will be available again
Sunday newspaper will be included in your Saturday paper
Print subscribers have access to our website and e-edition 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Story updates and breaking news are constantly provided, often including photos and videos you don’t see if you only read the print edition.

We thank you for your support of The Pine Bluff Commercial and we trust you understand that these changes will help us remain successful for many years to come. We take our role as your local information source very serious and as our tagline states, we are committed to Local news and will continue to do a great job for you in the future.

May the coming year be prosperous in every way for you and your families. Happy New Year!

I noted in looking for phone numbers that the contact section of the website lists four employees in the news department — a sports reporter, a reporter, a news clerk and a managing editor.
