A group rallied at the Capitol today in support of retaining the voter-approved increase in the minimum wage.
Rep. Robin Lundstrum won House committee approval Tuesday of legislation to roll back the wage increase for thousands of workers. The criticism was loud enough that Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he couldn’t support the bill, which apparently is being pushed by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, which had campaigned against the ballot initiative, approved by two-thirds of Arkansas voters.
The phase-in moves the minimum wage from $8.50 to $11 an hour by 2021.
Lundstrum, whose business interests include rental units, says she still intends to attempt to pass the bill despite growing opposition, but won’t put it on the agenda for a House vote today.
