ANDREW ROGERSON: Explains budget plan at staff meeting today.

UA Little Rock Chancellor Andrew Rogerson has scheduled a faculty and staff meeting this afternoon to talk about budgeting for the fiscal year beginning July 1. No specifics available yet, but he is expected to outline budget reduction

We reported earlier this month on a freeze in hiring and purchasing for the balance of this budget year. Rogerson said then that a drop in full-time students was a major part of a decline in revenue.

We’ll update later today with specifics.

Brian Chilson reports from the talk that Rogerson has mentioned, among others, the damaging impact the eStem charter school on campus has had on the campus. The faculty and others have said crowding and the presence of high school students had damaged the college experience, particularly for full-time students.

Rogerson announced a $6 million budget cut, more than 3 percent of this year’s operating budget. That seems certain to affect jobs.

Chilson reports that Rogerson said the administration will try to make up for shortfalls through attrition as much as possible. Other possibilities include cuts in the works program, reducing chairs from 12-month to 10-month contracts. Further reductions in visiting faculty also are being considered.
