HINDMAN PARK GOLF COURSE: Have a better idea?

Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. has named a 20-member group to make recommendations on how to use acreage that has been devoted to the Hindman Park and War Memorial golf courses that are to be closed in a few weeks.

They are Pamela Bingham, Jodie Carter, Kevin Crass, Andrea Cummings, Jim Dailey, Chris East, Quincy Edwards, Johnathan Goree, Shash Goyal, Suzanne Grobmyer, Ada Hollingsworth, Stacy Hurst, Jordan Johnson, Jane Kim, Janna Knight, Dr. Riley Lipschitz, Jessie McLarty, Alejandro Ortiz, Steven Phillips and Kara Wilkins.

A news release said Vice Mayor B.J. Wyrick, Port Authority Director Bryan Day, Rock Region Metro Director Charles Frazier, and Parks and Recreation Director John Eckart will serve as ex-officio members.

Scott said he expected the group to “think big and propose bold ideas to create public spaces everyone will want to use and enjoy.”

An online survey is still open to suggestions.

They’ll have to be brainy to figure out how to do much in parks with a city budget that just had to be cut to lay off three dozen people.

And, finally, I can’t say often enough: NO COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN WAR MEMORIAL PARK. NO BARS. NO FLOODLIT DRIVING RANGES. NO HANDOUTS OF INVALUABLE GREEN SPACE TO PRIVATE INTERESTS.

PS: I’m reminded the city is sitting on unused park land near Chenal Valley, at Markham and Bowman and the former Western Hills golf course. Any comprehensive parks plan needs to consider that territory as well.
