Trump lies. Dog bites man. The president, as is his wont, showed his typical sniveling contempt for the American people, telling yet another lie today obviously contradicted by video evidence.

Trump was asked by reporters why he didn’t try to stop the chant of “send her back” which broke out at a North Carolina rally this week when Trump was criticizing U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

“I think I did,” Trump lied in response. He then continued to lie: “I started speaking very quickly.” In fact, he was silent for 13 seconds, pausing and stepping back from the podium, then looking back and forth to the crowd. He offered no disapproval. One might say that he was basking. Here’s the video

Trump said that it was “quite a chant,” but claimed that he “disagreed with it” and “was not happy” with it.

“I felt a little bit badly about it,” he said. “But I will say this,” he added, lying, “I started speaking very quickly.”

When reporters pointed out that Trump was lying, he responded by telling another lie. “I could have stood back,” he said, describing precisely what he in fact did before segueing to fantasy, “I started very quickly and I think you know that.”

The blowback, including from some Republican lawmakers, has apparently been too much for Trump to bear so he is retreating into risible lies rather than trying to defend the indefensible. The demagogue with his tail between his legs.

We will hear this chant again. Trump will fail again to appeal to the better angels of our nature. “Send her back.” This is who he is. This is who he always was.
