An update on the commenting system: we’ve heard you about Commento. I am currently looking into migrating our comments and commenters to Disqus, which is a more mature product and should alleviate the problems you’ve been experiencing.

The goal was to avoid Disqus as they sell users’ data to third-party services, but similar to how we’re forced to lean on Facebook and Google, the benefits of Disqus and their less-than-ethical practices seem to outweigh the negatives at this point. There aren’t many (solid) options for plug-and-play comment services.

Once the Disqus migration is complete – and contingent on budget, we’ll be looking at the feasibility of implementing what’s called single sign-on, or SSO. The long-story-short of SSO is that it will unify the paywall and commenting accounts (along with newsletters) and provide for a simpler interface for managing your subscription and comments.
