The Pope County Quorum Court voted 8-4 tonight, with one abstention, to endorse the Cherokee nation’s pitch, in conjunction with a group whose owners include Dallas Cowboy owner Jerry Jones, to build a casino in the County.

KARK reports

The QC has a promise for almost $40 million in handouts from the casino to local governments

The recommendation is enough for a legit application to state regulators. Four other competitors want the permit.

No mention as yet of local voter initiated ordinance that requires a vote before a local casino endorsement. It is currently the law, absent a judicial ruling that the ordinance is unconstitutional. Local leaders seem to be adopting the view that they can ignore the law. Lawsuits are likely.
