Authorities haven’t made much progress in figuring what triggered the killing spree in Texas Saturday.

But little investigation is needed to establish one fact: military-style semi-automatic weapons are efficient instruments of human slaughter — seven dead and 22 injured, including three law enforcement officers, in the latest use. Republican politicians in Texas and elsewhere say there should be no legal curbs on sale of such weapons or extended ammunition accessories. The implication, then, is that we need MORE not fewer of such weapons to be safe. The armed school employees they favor, it would follow, aren’t sufficiently equipped with handguns stored in purses or ankle holsters. They need semi-automatic military-style guns with 100-round magazines.
