Jacksonville Police Chief John Franklin was forced to resign Tuesday.
He came to the city from Chicago, where he retired after 25 years with the police department, in June 2018. The Leader said Mayor Bob Johnson requested the resignation and Capt. Joseph McCollough will serve as interim chief. No details yet available on the reason for the change.
Franklin was hired (not fired as I originally wrote) after turmoil in the department under previous leadership. In his year he’s faced internal department efforts to raise pay for senior officers, including a private meeting with City Council members, and had to respond to deadly force use by officers.
