Northwest Arkansas is widely presumed to be fortress GOP for political candidates, but there’s a heartening effort by Democrats to turn the tide. The hope is that the influx of outsiders to jobs at Walmart and elsewhere will bring a slightly more progressive voter pool.
Here’s another making the effort. Nick Jones, 38, of Centerton, is aiming for the seat held by retiring Republican Rep. Dan Douglas, a solidly pro-business legislator who nonetheless departed from dogma from time to time.
Jones said he’d endeavor to emulate the “strong moderate leadership” of Douglas. Three Republicans have also announced for the seat.
Jones, a substance abuse counselor at Ozark Guidance in Springdale, served 15 years in the Air Force, including multiple deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Here’s his website. It says:
I am running for State Representative because I believe that I can be a strong leader for my district. The person who held this seat had a level head and clear values and I plan to continue that when elected. Throughout my adult life, I have looked for ways to serve and give back, whether it was in the Air Force or in my current career as a Substance Abuse Counselor.
My platform will be based around issues that are important to me, my family, and my district. I am running on smart growth, rural resilience, and a commitment to care for the most vulnerable in our communities like our children and veterans.
For 7 years, the people of District 91 have not had a choice when it comes to who represents them. They’ve had one candidate from one party and I believe they deserve to have someone who represents them, that understands them and their struggles, and that works every day to see that their representative works for their interests
