As expected, former state legislator Tracy Steele has announced his entry in the race for North Little Rock mayor to succeed retiring Joe Smith, who edged  Steele in a runoff in 2012. Former Mayor Terry Hartwick, currently the city parks and recreation director, announced earlier. Other have talked of running.

Steele, who served in the House and Senate as a Democrat, was tapped by Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson to head the Arkansas Health Services Permit Agency after endorsing Hutchinson in 2014. He’s also president of the North Little Rock School Board. Steele said he’ll emphasize education, public safety, economic development and infrastructure.
