NEA Report says ABC Administrator Doralee Chandler has denied an alcoholic beverage permit for the Malco theater in Jonesboro, apparently on account of objections from Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington.
Administrative denial of permit applications is routine when there are law enforcement objections. NEA report said Ellington protested the permit in a letter to the ABC in September. He said it would be a “nightmare” to monitor alcohol consumption in a “darkened, loud” environment. He said he feared alcohol would be shared with minors and potentially make them more at risk of abuse.
Ellington, who is a candidate for judge this year, said theaters were places where families gather, particularly after lunch on Christmas day.
The administrator’s denial can be appealed to the ABC Board, which is somewhat more lenient on permit applications. The proposal won narrow approval from the Jonesboro City Council.
