The Arkansas State University Board today approved a merger with Henderson State University.

Approval also will be required by the state Higher Education Commission and the legislature. Jan. 1, 2021 is the targeted completion date.

Henderson will retain its name. Its interim president will report to the head of ASU, Chuck Welch, and he’ll head the search for a permanent president, who’d become chancellor on completion of the merger.

ASU will seek to expand its board from five to seven, with two new members representing Henderson.

The ASU system plans to review Henderson operations and finances.  Financial troubles contributed to the decision by Henderson to merge.
