The Arkansas State Police is investigating the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer that resulted in the death of Dominick Matt, 17, of Bentonville.
Matt was reportedly shot last night (Friday, December 6th) by a Bentonville Police Officer. The officer was in the area of Greenhouse Road and SW Briar Creek Avenue searching for a suspect involved in the attempted robbery of a nearby convenience store. At 11:23 PM Matt was seen walking in the area of the store and was approached by the officer. Matt allegedly brandished a handgun during the encounter leading the officer to shoot Matt. The officer was not injured.
Special agents of the state police criminal investigation division were assigned to the case following a request directed to the state police by authorities within the Bentonville Police Department.
While Matt is believed to have been the individual who attempted the robbery, the scope of the state police investigation is limited to the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer as defined under Arkansas law.
