Motive remains unclear this morning in the fatal shooting of a Fayetteville police officer outside police headquarters shortly before he was to go on duty about 9:40 p.m. Saturday night. Officers responding to the shooting shot and killed the suspect shortly afterward.

Police said the suspect fired at officers who shot him in an alley near the police station at Rock Street and Block Avenue near the downtown square.

Neither the officer nor the suspect has been identified. A police spokesman said last night that it appeared the officer had been “executed.”

Also, he held a medical marijuana card, which under federal law disqualified him from legally purchasing or possessing a weapon.

The shooting was the third of the weekend involving police. Bentonvillie police killed a suspected convenience store robber Friday night. In Pine Bluff Saturday afternoon, shots were exchanged between officers and suspects, but no one was injured. Two people were taken into custody.
