Ernie Biggs, a mainstay of the River Market entertainment scene announced on Facebook that it would be closing Dec. 28. No further explanation was offered.
It may only be coincidental, but the company that operates Ernie Biggs reached the end of the line earlier this fall on a lawsuit seeking broader coverage from its insurance carrier in the case of a customer bounced from the bar in 2015 and injured when his head struck pavement outside. The insurance company agreed to pay the injured customer the amount remaining on $100,000 in assault and battery coverage, but successfully argued it wasn’t required to pay under a broader $1 million liability policy. The Supreme Court declined to review the Court of Appeals decision in the case. The man who was injured had originally sued the club, but joined Ernie Biggs in the appeal on insurance representation. That incident led to a fine and probation for the club from state alcoholic beverage regulators.
