Here’s your daily impeachment thread.

The House impeachment managers prosecuting the case against President Trump began their opening arguments yesterday. U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff of California argued that Trump’s corrupt scheme to extort the Ukrainian government to announce an investigation into a political rival amounted to an attempt to “cheat” in the 2020 election. Trump then obstructed justice in attempting to cover up the plot, Schiff said.

“The president has shown that he believes that he’s above the law and scornful of constraint,” Schiff argued. If the Senate failed to hold Trump in check, Schiff said, “President Trump’s abuse of his office and obstruction of Congress will permanently alter the balance of power among the branches of government.”

The peevish president lashed out with manic thumbs, sending out 142 tweets or retweets over the course of he day, the most of any single day of his presidency.

Like many Republican senators, Tom Cotton snickered throughout the proceedings, taking his own teen spirits to Twitter and comforting himself with a tall glass of milk.

Arguments yesterday went for about eight hours and are expected to go another eight hours today, beginning at 1 p.m. That would leave a final eight hours for the House managers’ arguments on Friday.
