Arkansas State Parks appears set to get an influx of funding from the Waltons for work on the Delta Heritage Trail State Park, a “rails to trails” project currently under development.

The public path for walkers and bikers, which runs along a former railway corridor, will eventually extend more than 84 miles between Lexa and Arkansas City.  To date, more than 44.4 miles of trail have been completed. There are currently eight trailheads at Lexa, Barton, Lick Creek, Lake View, Elaine, Watson, Rohwer, and Arkansas City.

Governor Hutchinson is set to make a “major announcement” next week at the trail’s visitor center in Barton, the Parks Department announced in a press release:

Arkansas State Parks and the Walton Family Foundation will host an event on Thursday, January 30, to announce a major collaboration in the Arkansas Delta designed to provide a unique recreational opportunity in Eastern Arkansas as well as improve the economy through increased tourism in the area and provide a pathway to a healthy lifestyle.

The announcement is set for Thursday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. The governor will be joined by Parks Department officials, representatives from the Walton Family Foundation and U.S. District Judge Brian Miller.
