UPDATE: The death toll grows to 19 children and two teachers. Republicans shrug.

It’s awful. The shooter at the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school is reportedly also dead. These are preliminary reports, subject to change but not likely to get any better.

Like Arkansas, Texas is an open-carry state where pretty much anybody can tote guns around with minimal regulations. Letting weapons manufacturers craft laws designed to sell more guns means lots of Americans die unnecessarily. Today, those Americans were elementary school kids.
