Politico is reporting that Tom Cotton is telling his people that he won’t run for president in 2024 after all.

He falls back on the old family ruse — a campaign would take him away from his young kids.

We’ve heard that excuse before. I think a couple of factors are also likely contributing.

Looks like Donald Trump will run again. Cotton can’t very well oppose someone he’s supported so slavishly, though he reportedly claims that wouldn’t deter him.

More plausible: All the people in New Hampshire and Iowa Cotton has been courting (taking valuable time away from his family) may not have been charmed by the charisma-challenged senator who claims to be from Arkansas.  There are apparently enough idle billions lying around in the hands of warped people to provide plenty of money even for a Tom Cotton. His Senate campaign treasury testifies to that. But money alone doesn’t win political races.

He will be running for re-election again. More’s the pity for Arkansas.

But, God help us, he says he’d be happy to take a national post in a Republican administration. Such as CIA director.

Abu Ghraib here we come again.
