Talk mounts that news is coming soon of a change in leadership of the Department of Parks Heritage and Tourism, now headed by Stacy Hurst, a leader in the Hutchinson administration since 2015.

Incoming Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has vowed to promote the state as a tourism destination.

UPDATE: Stacy is gone. She’ll be replaced by Mike Mills, owner of the Buffalo Outdoor Center and a board member of the department’s board on outdoor recreation.

Sources within and without the department say a change in leadership of the major agency — the state parks system and an immense advertising budget are just part of the agency’s work — is widely expected. Hurst has not responded to my question about this or acknowledged an FOI request for communications related to her future in the agency.

Changes in leadership are, of course, common with changes in governors, even those from the same political party. But …

Hurst’s shakeup of the Heritage Department ruffled some feathers. Democrat-Gazette columnist Tom Dillard wrote of the “toxic culture” Hurst created at the department with several moves. In short: If the rumors of a change are true, this is a Sanders’ decision that will be cheered in some quarters.

This would be the first pure replacement of a Hutchinson cabinet leader.  Sanders’ announced pick for public safety secretary filled a job being held on an interim basis. State Police Troop A Commander Mike Hagar will take that job as well as succeed Bill Bryant as State Police director– a job from which Bryant planned to retire at the end of Hutchinson’s term.
