Almost four months after the arrest of a South Carolina man turned violent in Mulberry in Crawford County, state and federal authorities are still investigating the officers’ actions.
That word came today from Emily White, the special state prosecutor appointed to review the arrests last August.
Two of the three Crawford County officers involved in the arrest — sheriff’s deputies Levi White and Zachary King — were subsequently fired. The third officer — Mulberry police officer Thell Riddle — remains on leave, the town’s police chief, Shannon Gregory, said today.
The officers were arresting suspect Randal Worcester, 27, of Goose Creek, S.C., over an earlier incident in a Mulberry grocery.
The three officers were caught on a bystander’s cellphone video kicking, hitting and pounding Worcester’s head into the cement.
The FBI, the Justice Department and the special prosecutor have been investigating the arrest, as the Arkansas State Police did earlier.
Worcester was formally charged Tuesday with several offenses, including first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree battery.
